Assassin Fuzen does not raise his voice, because Assassin Fuzen does not need to, the katana lying in two clean pieces beside an empty jug being explanation enough for anyone with eyes and a working sense of dread. The English Pilot laughed when it snapped somewhere over the third round in the Meiji Jungle, laughed the way men laugh right before they remember they are alone with an assassin whose blade just betrayed him, and then stopped laughing when Fuzen simply sat there in silence, patient as unpaid debt. He has announced, calmly, that seppuku is the only honorable path forward, and has been announcing it for three days now, sharpening a replacement blade so slowly it seems less like preparation and more like a man stalling on a contract he privately hopes gets renegotiated. Every samurai instinct in him demands the old discipline, the clean ending, the ritual done right, but the degenerate in him keeps finding reasons to have one more drink first, one more hand of cards, one more excuse to postpone the only deadline he has ever truly feared. Somewhere in the jungle The English Pilot still owes him a katana, and until that debt is settled, death itself will simply have to wait in line.”

Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.

'Fuzen' means incompleteness, a joke at his own expense before it was a name. The blade sent for the jobs that had to be certain — left with one last name on his list when the wars ended.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Tied before the fight. The Green Bandana fighters have a ritual of preparation — the bandana is how they mark the transition.
Not metaphorical. Someone's leg bone, spiked. The Spiky Femur fighters have been here long enough that the bones of their enemies are now equipment.
