Under a high moon over Fuzen, the contract still open on his belt, Assassin Fuzen dealt with his men the way he always did, quietly, patiently, like a debt collector who enjoys the interest more than the principal. Somewhere between the second beating and the third, a pouch of mushrooms changed hands, and the moon got a little higher, a little rounder, a little more amused at his expense. He remembers thinking, in that soft chemical hush, that discipline was just a contract he kept meaning to sign and never did, one more unfinished job in a ledger full of them. He tried to meditate afterward, the old samurai way, spine straight, breath slow, and instead found himself laughing at a shadow for twenty minutes like it owed him money. Fuzen lives one day at a time now, mostly because his hands shake too much to plan a second one, and honestly, the shrooms don't rug you the way loyalty does.
