Diary
Assassin Fuzen once carried more koku than a man could spend in three lifetimes, and then, over one loose-lipped night in Nagoya, he carried none. Somebody bought a round, somebody bought his tongue, and by dawn his secrets were common gossip and his fortune was somebody else's floor. He has since decided, with the calm of a man closing a contract on himself, that the incident simply did not happen, and he maintains this fiction the way he maintains a blade, quietly and with terrifying patience. Every so often a stray whisper of Nagoya reaches him, and he only tilts his head, unfinished business flickering behind his eyes, before returning to the discipline he swears he still has. He is trying, badly, to become a man who never talks, in a dojo full of men who never shut up, and the job, like most jobs he takes these days, remains open.
Not contacts. Not paint. Something older. The Shaman Eyes fighters see through the collection at a frequency others can't access, and they've been doing it since before the derug.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Wore everything out. The Dirty Peasant Rags fighters have been in the Dojo so long that newness has become impossible — everything they own carries the evidence.
'Fuzen' means incompleteness, a joke at his own expense before it was a name. The blade sent for the jobs that had to be certain — left with one last name on his list when the wars ended.
Carried more than worn. The Pocket Glasses fighters have perfect vision when they choose to apply it — the rest of the time, they let instinct run.
The warrior and the wanderer. Worn by those who are between destinations but never between fights.
Musical instrument. Strung instrument. The Shamisen fighters understand that performance and violence are not opposites — they are the same act in different registers.
