Diary
Masumi remembers the sakura petals falling like a slow, indifferent verdict the day he lost his nerve to Junichiro, and he has decided, with the flat certainty of a man reading a coroner's report, that the trees were in on it too. He tells anyone who asks that he can do better, the way a man tells himself the floor will hold before the rug gets pulled clean from under the whole dojo. Every morning he wakes at dawn to restring his resolve like an old bow, and every morning by noon he's three bong rips deep, watching the blossoms drift past his window and thinking, correctly, that beauty is just decay with better PR. He does not train today. He does not train tomorrow either, probably, but he says it out loud so it sounds like a plan instead of a pattern, and somewhere under the same trees Junichiro is definitely, definitely not thinking about him. Masumi calls this clarity. Everyone else just calls it Tuesday.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
Every cracked card. White is the beginner's belt, and torn is how the crack left it, border and all: a White card is never printed. A repair earns Blue.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Unglamorous and honest. The Black Peasant Rags fighters didn't dress for anyone else. They dressed for function and found that function is its own statement.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Clean but rough. The White Ruffian fighters look like they could have behaved properly and chose not to. The white makes the choice more visible.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,468 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Used and not cleaned. The Bloody Nunchucks fighters are efficient — cleaning was someone else's job and they had the next fight to prepare for.
