Diary
Masumi soaked in the onsen at Kinosaki with the flat expression of a man reading his own obituary and finding the prose serviceable, and between long silences he dispensed gossip the way old masters once dispensed wisdom, precisely, cruelly, and with excellent timing. Everyone in the water left richer in rank and poorer in dignity, which he considered a fair trade, since dignity was rugged from him years ago on a battlefield nobody bothered writing down. He tried, once, to meditate on discipline instead, sword across his knees, mind on the void, and lasted four minutes before noting aloud that the void was, statistically, disappointing. So he returned to the steam and the whispers, because bushido never paid rent and rumors apparently did, and he floated there admitting to himself, without flinching, that he regretted nothing except the version of him that used to expect better. That honesty didn't warm him, but at least it didn't lie, and in the Dojo that passes for peace.
Heavy. Deliberate. The Golden Earring fighters wear their conviction in precious metal on the outside so everyone knows before they speak.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
Every cracked card. White is the beginner's belt, and torn is how the crack left it, border and all: a White card is never printed. A repair earns Blue.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
A flying squirrel, riding along. The Little Momonga Friend fighters lost their lords and their honor, but kept one small companion who never asks about either.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The bowl cut of total commitment. The Rock Lee fighters wear the haircut of someone who trained past the point of reason, and they still believe hard work fixes everything, including hangovers.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,468 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Games within games. The Chō-Han Gambling Dice fighters turned the casino into the armory and find this philosophically consistent.
