Diary
Masumi found enlightenment the way most men find a hangover: unwillingly, and in a bathhouse in Kinosaki, where an old attendant screamed at him for soaking with his tattoos showing and his jug of shochu balanced on the rocks like a shrine offering. Something about the man's rage was honest in a way nothing in Masumi's life had been since the wars ended, and honesty, he decided, was the last discipline he had left to practice. So now he plans seppuku, methodically, the way he once polished a blade, though the ritual keeps getting rescheduled because the dispensary run took longer than expected and the good sake was on sale. He has written three farewell letters and lost all three under a pile of gambling slips he swears he'll sort through tomorrow. It is, he admits with the flat calm of a man reading his own obituary aloud, the most disciplined thing he has attempted in years, which is itself the joke and the tragedy, since he can't even die on schedule.'
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Red moon, heightened stakes. The Red High Moon backgrounds mark the moments when everything was on the line and the fighter stayed.
Every cracked card. White is the beginner's belt, and torn is how the crack left it, border and all: a White card is never printed. A repair earns Blue.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Named for something specific. The Cet Kimono fighters know what they're wearing and why — the rest is for others to figure out.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
In motion even when still. The Wavy fighters are always already moving — the hair is just the most visible evidence.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,468 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Stars on a strap. The Shuriken fighters carry more throwing stars than they will ever throw, because running out mid-fight is the one thing they still fear.
