Igor does not talk about that summer, but the scar on his knuckles and the stillness in his eyes do the talking for him. It was heat like a forge, the kind that melts a man's better sense clean out of him, and Legless Tom poured the drinks like he was funding a war effort. Somewhere between the fourth cup and the sunrise, something in Igor snapped into place, or maybe broke loose, nobody's sure which, least of all him. He tried once, only once, to get back to the old discipline, the dawn drills and the quiet mind, but his hands shook for the bottle before they ever found the blade. Now men call him The Veteran and he lets them, because explaining the truth would take more words than he has left in him.”
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
