Igor does not talk about the war, and he does not talk about that afternoon at his mum's house either, but the silence around both is the same weight. He once held a blade with discipline enough to still a room; now the room stills for a different reason, and he lets it. There was weed on the table, a mind that had aped into its own worst idea, and a curtain that did not close all the way, and that was the whole battle right there, lost before the first move. He tells no one the details, only that a man can survive Sekigahara and still get rugged by his own hand in his mother's living room. The floor dropped out from under him that day and some part of him, the disciplined part, the samurai part, never climbed back up, though he still shows up every morning and tries.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Turns toward light. The Silken Sunflower Kimono fighters move toward what sustains them without apology or explanation.
The other Igor — the lean one, who earned the word Veteran inside the dojo rather than bringing it with him. He's never explained what it refers to, and nobody's asked twice.
Demon woman, half revealed. The Hannya Half Mask fighters show the monstrous half and keep the human half private.
Crow spirit, long nose, ancient power. The Tengu Mask fighters are wearing something that predates the Dojo — something older that chose to be here.
Not metaphorical. Someone's leg bone, spiked. The Spiky Femur fighters have been here long enough that the bones of their enemies are now equipment.
