On Misty Mountain the fog came in low and Igor's blade came in faster than his sense, and when it was done his superior was on the ground and his dreams were rugged for good, no floor beneath them ever again. They stripped his rank the way a bad trade strips a wallet, quiet and total, and he walked down off that mountain a man with nowhere left to salute. Now he sits at the back tables where the room goes quiet when he talks, not because he says much, just enough, a name, a number, the mountain's name if someone's dumb enough to ask twice. He tried discipline again once, swore off the bottle and the weed for a whole week, made it four days before he was three cups deep watching the fog roll over the dojo courtyard same as it rolled that morning. He never explains the title Veteran, never explains the mountain either, he just carries both the way a man carries a debt he already knows he can't pay off.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
