The market smelled of brine and old blood the morning Igor's elbow gave out, snapped clean while he drilled his men between the tuna crates and the shouting fishmongers. He did not cry out. He looked at the bone bending wrong under his skin the way a man looks at a debt finally called in, then kept swinging until the lesson was finished. They say the room went quiet after, the way it always does when Igor decides something is over. He wears the crooked arm now like a medal he minted himself, and swears the ache reminds him more of the dojo than any clean strike ever did. Some nights he tries to run the old forms again, half a joint burning on the crate beside him, and the arm folds wrong every time, but he calls that discipline too, in his own way.”
