In Okinawa, Igor wore his superior's crest for one night, one bad bet dressed up as duty, and the silence that followed was louder than any battlefield he'd survived. Nobody asks him about it twice. He paid for it in ways men don't put into words, and the debt sits behind his eyes even now, patient as tide. These days he watches the young degens ape into positions they can't spell and lose their shirts by lunch, and something old in him, some dead sergeant's ghost, wants to drill discipline back into their soft, floor-chasing hands. He shows up to teach most mornings, coffee black, jaw set, and by noon he's three cups deep just staring at the mats, remembering a name he doesn't say and a rank he never earned. The room still quiets when he talks. That's the only apology he's got left to give.
