Diary
The izakaya reeked of spilled sake and old regret, the kind of place where the tatami mats had given up pretending to be clean years ago, and Lovey Haruto sat there smiling like it was the finest teahouse in Kyoto anyway. A rat scuttled across his sandal mid-toast, and without breaking eye contact with Goro across the room, he pinned it clean through with a chopstick he'd sworn only that morning to use exclusively for eating with grace and discipline, as a proper reformed samurai should. Goro flinched at the sound, but Haruto just grinned wider, dabbing the mess with a napkin and murmuring something gentle about how even vermin deserve a quick end delivered kindly. It was supposed to be the night he finally kept his vow of moderation, one drink, one thought, one calm breath at a time, but the sake kept coming and the vow kept dying quieter than the rat. Still, he lived it the only way he knew, one reckless, tender day after another, kindness in one hand and a blade in the other, forgiving himself before the sun even asked him to.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Unclear until it clears. The Grey Mist backgrounds belong to fighters who operate where others can't see, and use that fog as their advantage.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Minimum. Clean. The Fight Gi fighters believe that preparation is visible in the garment — this one says the fighter has done this before.
'Haruto' — warm person. He fights with something that looks like kindness, until you realize kindness done right is the hardest discipline of all, and he never stops choosing it.
Paper screen optics. The Shoji Glasses fighters see the world through traditional frames — and find that the tradition holds.
Practical. Focused. The Hair Bun fighters pulled back what was in their eyes so they could see the whole board.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
