Long before the floors got rugged and the sake replaced the dojo bell, Lovey Haruto led his men into a scrap at the Edo palace, and instead of screaming them into submission he simply refused to stop being kind, even mid-swing, even when the smoke cleared and half his crew were still arguing about who tapped first. He won that day not on rage but on the strange, disarming warmth he brought to a room built for cruelty, and something in his chest clicked into place, a confidence he had never let himself hold before. Now he calls himself wiser, and he mostly is, though his idea of discipline these days is promising himself only one bowl before meditation and somehow ending up three deep, humming apologies to a floor candle he definitely knocked over. Still, he greets every degenerate, ronin, and rugged gambler at the tavern with the same gentle eyes he gave his men that day at Edo, like kindness itself were a blade he simply forgot how to sheathe. He aches, quietly, for the tight discipline of his samurai years, but even losing that fight, he loses it smiling, and somehow that softness keeps winning him fights nobody expected him to win.
