Diary
Lovey Haruto climbed Mount Hotaka the way he did most things, offering a gentle word to every stranger on the trail and a rice ball to anyone who looked hungry, until a little tin of wasabi paste betrayed him near the ridgeline. He had meant to take a modest dab, a disciplined dab, the kind a former samurai should be able to manage without incident, but his hand slipped and his mouth filled with green fire, and for one terrible unguarded minute the warmth in him curdled into something loud and startled and very un-Lovey. He is fairly sure he did not yell at the mountain itself, though a passing hiker's face suggests otherwise, and he has since decided, with the same soft conviction he uses to forgive everyone else, that the whole episode simply did not happen. Now when people bring it up he just smiles wider, offers them tea, and changes the subject with such tenderness that most give up trying to get the real story out of him. It is, he privately admits, the one place his discipline still buckles like a cheap floor, but he figures a man who forgets his own worst moment has that much more room in his heart for everyone else's.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
'Haruto' — warm person. He fights with something that looks like kindness, until you realize kindness done right is the hardest discipline of all, and he never stops choosing it.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The Dojo's version of a mohawk. More specific, more named. The Dejen Mohawk fighters chose the Dojo's interpretation of rebellion over the generic one.
Direct. No ambiguity. The Axe fighters made a decision about what kind of fighter they are and the axe confirms it every time.
