The afternoon in Kyoto sat heavy as wet ash, and Teary Goro stood in the market square screaming obscenities at a cluster of women who hadn't asked for his opinion, his voice cracking somewhere between rage and a sob he refused to name. He'd meant to draw his katana in some half remembered kata, a discipline drill he swore he'd restart every single morning like clockwork, but his grip slipped on the sweat and the blade snapped clean against the stone well, and he laughed so hard he choked, tears running down a face that hadn't stopped mourning something since the wars ended. Somebody nearby muttered that he'd been rugged by his own sword, floor price zero, and Goro just nodded, wiping his eyes, cradling the broken hilt to his chest like it was a fallen brother he was carrying home. He didn't apologize to the women, didn't apologize to the sword, didn't apologize to the version of himself that used to meditate before dawn instead of blackout drinking sake with strangers, because apology required a ceremony he'd long since lost the stomach for. He regrets nothing, he says, grinning through the wet on his cheeks, already promising tomorrow he'll be disciplined again, already knowing tomorrow he'll be exactly this same beautiful mess.
