Goro knelt on the tatami mats the way his old sensei taught him, spine straight, breath counted in fours, and for exactly nine seconds he was a disciplined man again. Then The Degen Scholar sat across from him smelling of stale weed and older regrets, unrolled a scroll that was actually just a crumpled floor-price chart, and started talking about impermanence like it was a rug pull he'd survived personally. Goro laughed at the joke and wept at the same time, the way he does at funerals and birthdays and Tuesdays, because the Scholar's wisdom landed exactly where his old code used to live, and something in him got quietly, permanently stained. He walked out of that room tainted, he'll tell you, grinning through wet eyes, no longer pure but somehow lighter, carrying one more fallen version of himself so nobody else has to hold it.
