Diary
Goro had been hired to trim the cherry blossoms outside the men's pleasure house, a quiet task meant to steady his hands and his breath the way his old sword drills once did, but the shears slipped and the branch he loved most fell wrong, and something in him that had been holding on since the wars finally let go. He wept right there in the petals, laughing through it because that was the only way grief ever left him, tender even as he cursed the tree like it had betrayed him personally. The girls inside came out to see what the noise was, found a grown ronin cradling a broken branch like it was a fallen brother, and nobody had the heart to charge him for the damage. He swore that night, half a jug of sake deep, that he would ape into discipline again, meditation at dawn, no more weed before noon, no more crying at things that couldn't cry back, and by sunrise he'd already rugged his own resolution twice. Still he goes back to that same tree every season, shears trembling, grief with no ceremony left, carrying what falls so nothing has to fall alone.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The standard-bearer. The Proud Dejen Kimono fighters represent the collection consciously — they know what they're part of and they dress accordingly.
He carried a spear through more wars than he can count and outlived nearly every man in his line. He buried brothers by torchlight and never broke — the tears came later, all at once.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The warrior and the wanderer. Worn by those who are between destinations but never between fights.
Found. Not forged. The Large Branch fighters don't wait for the right weapon — they use what's available and are surprised when this needs explanation.
