Diary
Goro used to bow before he entered a room; now he just knocks his knuckles on his mother's kitchen table like it's a war drum, laying his fief on the felt because the floor at the dojo felt too honest for what he'd become. He remembers the exact moment the ancestral lands slid across the table into some kid's stack of chips, remembers laughing so hard he cried, and remembers that the laughing never really stopped being crying after that. His mother still keeps his old armor by the door like he might suit up again, and every morning he tells himself today's the day he quits the tables, meditates at dawn, becomes the disciplined blade he was raised to be, and every morning he's back at someone's kitchen table by noon with a fresh bad beat story and a heart too soft to walk away from a friend's losing hand. He carries losses now the way he once carried fallen brothers off the field, gently, without ceremony, because someone has to hold the weight and it might as well be the man who's already lost everything worth losing. Rugged by his own bloodline, aped his birthright into a pot he never should have called, and somehow still the tenderest man in any room, still setting a place at the table for grief like it's family, because at this point, it is.
Worn as trophy or warning — nobody is quite sure which. The Chicken Bones fighters have a ceremony for everything and share it with no one.
Red moon, heightened stakes. The Red High Moon backgrounds mark the moments when everything was on the line and the fighter stayed.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
After the rice was used. The Rice Sack Rags fighters wear what remains after everything useful has been extracted — and find it sufficient.
He carried a spear through more wars than he can count and outlived nearly every man in his line. He buried brothers by torchlight and never broke — the tears came later, all at once.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Focus made visible. The Karate Headband fighters bound their intention around their skull so it couldn't escape during the fight.
A live chicken. As a weapon. The Chicken fighters have committed to an approach that nobody expected and found that unexpectedness is half the battle.
