Diary
They still tell it at the Edo palace gates, how Goro broke rank to lift an old woman who'd stumbled on the stone steps, and how the captains called it dishonor instead of mercy, stripped his name from the roll before sundown. He didn't argue, just wept right there in the courtyard, laughing a little through it too, because what else do you do when the thing that gets you exiled is the thing you'd do again tomorrow. Now he keeps a tiny Buddha on a cracked altar in his one-room apartment, lights incense every morning with hands that shake a little less when he's holding someone else's grief instead of his own, and swears this week he'll meditate before he touches the sake, he swears it. He never does, not really, the bottle finds him by noon same as always, but he still shows up to carry the fallen fighters home after every dojo brawl, tucking degens into futons like they're his own sons, muttering sutras he half remembers between sobs and snorts of laughter. Honor left him at that palace, sure, but something gentler stayed, and Goro figures that's a trade the old samurai in him still doesn't fully understand, only feels, aching and warm, every single time.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Neither dark nor white. The Light Grey background belongs to fighters who operate in the space between certainties and have made it comfortable there.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Explicit in every sense. The Fuck You Kimono fighters made a communication choice and wore it. No ambiguity. No apology.
He carried a spear through more wars than he can count and outlived nearly every man in his line. He buried brothers by torchlight and never broke — the tears came later, all at once.
Authority through opacity. The Dark Spectacles fighters reveal nothing through their eyes and receive everything through them.
The farmer's crown. The Rice Hat fighters carry tradition on their head without ceremony — it's just what you wear when you have work to do.
Not metaphorical. Someone's leg bone, spiked. The Spiky Femur fighters have been here long enough that the bones of their enemies are now equipment.
