They called him legend after the noodle house days, back when Goro trained under scumbags who taught katas between hands of dice and spilled shochu, and somehow the broth-stained floor became a dojo holier than any shrine he'd known as a young samurai. He laughed through every bruise back then, laughed so hard tears came, and nobody could tell if he was grieving the man he used to be or just choking on chili oil, least of all Goro. Now he lives alone in the hills, a hermit who still bows to an empty room each morning, still tries to hold his stance for a hundred breaths and quits at eleven, cursing his knees, his weed pipe, his own soft discipline that keeps rugging him like a bad token. Some nights he carries the memory of every dead friend up the mountain path like they weigh something physical, setting them gently at the shrine so they don't have to wander, weeping the whole climb and grinning at the absurdity of a legend who can't even finish his own sit-ups. He tells the wind he's fine, he's always fine, and the wind, kindly, never argues back.
