Diary
Goro used to hold a blade the way monks hold prayer beads, steady, reverent, like discipline itself might notice him and stay. Then came the gambling house at the edge of nowhere, the sake-sticky tables, and the fatal, foolish moment his hand brushed Haruto's over a bet he never should have made, and something in him just folded, quiet as a paper crane crushed underfoot. He tells it now like a joke, laughing through the retelling, but his eyes go wet at the same beat every time, because the shame wasn't in the touch, it was in how easily he floor-rugged his own self-worth for a hand of cards. So he shaved his head, took up Buddhism with the desperate sincerity of a man trying to out-meditate his own memories, chanting sutras between hangovers like they might cancel each other out. He still visits the dojo of the fallen in his mind, carrying each of their stories so gently, even as his own robe smells faintly of weed and regret, a monk who found enlightenment everywhere except in himself.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Left the order. Didn't stop fighting. The Dejen Apostate fighters broke from whatever school trained them and found that the training stayed anyway.
He carried a spear through more wars than he can count and outlived nearly every man in his line. He buried brothers by torchlight and never broke — the tears came later, all at once.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
On fire, stable. The Burning Basket fighters operate in conditions most find impossible and have stopped noticing the fire.
Repurposed. Made for the earth, used for the fight. The Farmers Hoe fighters don't distinguish between cultivation and combat.
