Diary
Goro never meant to become a warrior, he just meant to win an argument, some Yakuza lieutenant mouthing off at the Degen Dojo bar about whose oshi was rugged harder that week, and one thing led to a chair, then a table, then a legend nobody asked him to carry. He tells it laughing now, tears sliding down before the punchline even lands, because that's how grief works when the ceremony's long gone, it just leaks out sideways while you're trying to be funny. Underneath the story is the old discipline he swore he'd rebuild, meditation at dawn, blade drills before breakfast, and every morning he still oversleeps, hungover, mumbling apologies to a version of himself that stopped listening years ago. He walks around proud anyway, shoulders back like his sensei taught him, because pride is the only armor he has left that still fits. When the newer fighters ask about the fight that made him, Goro just smiles wet-eyed and says he didn't win it, he just stayed standing longer than everyone he loved, and that's a kind of victory too, the degenerate kind, the only kind left on the floor.
Decorative. Traditional. The Tassel fighters know that ornament and function are not opposites — presentation is part of performance.
Red moon, heightened stakes. The Red High Moon backgrounds mark the moments when everything was on the line and the fighter stayed.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Grew things before they fought things. The Farmer clothing is the clearest record of what a fighter was before the Dojo changed them.
He carried a spear through more wars than he can count and outlived nearly every man in his line. He buried brothers by torchlight and never broke — the tears came later, all at once.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Elevated tradition. The High Straw Rice Hat fighters dress high above their own heads — everything they do is reaching upward.
Not metaphorical. Someone's leg bone, spiked. The Spiky Femur fighters have been here long enough that the bones of their enemies are now equipment.
