Teary Goro climbed Mount Haku the way he climbed everything now, half prayer and half hangover, weed smoke trailing behind him like incense for a funeral nobody scheduled yet. The Old Dragon listened to him ramble about the friends he'd buried and the floor that kept dropping out from under whatever discipline he tried to rebuild, and somewhere in that wheezing, laughing, snot-streaked confession his charisma actually went up, because grief worn openly is its own strange magnetism. Goro wept and grinned in the same breath telling the Dragon he planned to commit seppuku, and the Dragon, ancient and unimpressed, just asked if he'd finished his affairs or just his sake. He hasn't, of course, same as he never finishes the meditation streaks or the vows to quit gambling on koi races, but he swears this time the blade stays sheathed until the ritual's done right. Down the mountain he goes, carrying the memory of every fallen brother a little higher on his shoulders, crying mid laugh, promising the wind he'll be disciplined about dying since he never managed it living.'
