Diary
Goro sat ankle-deep in the flooded rows outside Sagae, broth dripping off his chin, laughing at a joke nobody told while a mortar's echo still rang between the paddy banks. He had gone back there for a bowl of noodles like it was any other Tuesday, though everyone in the Dojo knew he was really visiting the dead, carrying their names quietly the way he carries everything so nobody else has to. Halfway through the bowl he wept without missing a slurp, tears salting broth that was already too salty, and called it seasoning so the men beside him wouldn't put down their chopsticks in worry. He tells himself he's disciplined now, that he'll eat slow, sit straight-backed like the old dojo masters taught, but he still eats standing in ankle-deep water like a man daring the rice fields to take one more of his friends. He knows better now, he says, wiping his face with a sleeve that never quite dries, and somehow that's the truest joke and the saddest one all at once.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Blade pattern. The Katana Kimono fighters understand that what you wear signals what you expect — and they expect a fight.
He carried a spear through more wars than he can count and outlived nearly every man in his line. He buried brothers by torchlight and never broke — the tears came later, all at once.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Intentional declaration. The Mohawk Spike fighters made a choice that announces itself before they speak.
