Diary
At the Fushimi shrine, under a thousand red gates that used to mean something, Goro beat his own men in a sparring match that should have stayed friendly, and something in him snapped louder than any bokken ever could. Seven days now without sleep, he sits by the vending machines outside the dojo at 3 a.m., laughing wet-eyed at nothing, telling anyone still awake that he's fine, he's fine, while his hands shake like he's still holding the weapon. He carries his fallen brothers' names the way he used to carry their wounded off the field, quietly, so no one has to ask him to, though there's no field left and no war, just a scoreboard and a floor price and a shrine full of foxes judging him. He tried meditation apps, herbal tea, a discipline chart taped above his futon that says NO MORE HURTING PEOPLE YOU LOVE, and he has broken every rule on it by Tuesday. Somewhere between the grief and the giggling he keeps whispering sorry to men who aren't there, because tenderness is the only weapon he trusts himself with anymore.
Sober, unlike the drunk variant. The Lizard fighters have a companion with excellent judgment who never asks for anything and always seems to know when to leave.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Still learning. The Student Gi fighters are the most dangerous in the Dojo — they have no habits yet, no fixed patterns, no ceiling.
He carried a spear through more wars than he can count and outlived nearly every man in his line. He buried brothers by torchlight and never broke — the tears came later, all at once.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Precious redirection. The Golden Sai fighters catch what's thrown at them and return it changed — in gold.
