Goro used to guard the rice paddies of his home village like they were shrines, back when discipline meant something more than a word he cried into his sake cup. Then the priests came through with their soft promises and softer robes, and he let himself be talked into sleeping in the paddies with them under some blessing he can't even remember the name of now, laughing about it even as his eyes went wet. He woke to find his coin purse gone, his boots gone, his dignity somewhere out there floating with the rice shoots, and the priests long vanished toward whatever temple fleeces men like him for breakfast. He tells the story now with a grin that cracks halfway through, because the loss stings less than how uninspired the whole ordeal was, no fireworks, no divine light, just mud and betrayal and a chill in his bones. He still lights incense every morning for the men who trusted worse people than priests, promising himself discipline again tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow, carrying that broken vow the same gentle way he carries everyone else's grief.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
