Diary
Goro used to run a whole Yakuza cho, oyabun of men who'd die on his word and mostly did, and now he sits alone in his own quarters staring at a dream of glory that never bothered to knock. He laughs about it sometimes, a wet cracked laugh, because the alternative is just crying with no ceremony left to dress it up in, and he's buried too many brothers to pretend tears need a reason anymore. He tells himself he'll get disciplined again, wake at dawn, stop aping into whatever bottle or bag is closest, carry himself the way he still carries the fallen, but the resolution rugs itself by noon every single time. Miserable is the wrong word almost, too small, but it's the word he's got, so he sits with it, tender even toward his own ruin, whispering apologies to men who can't hear him and floors that used to mean something. Somewhere under the grief there's still a leader in him, just quiet now, holding the shape of who he was like a photograph he refuses to put down.
Without the gold. The Jesuit Crosses fighters have the same conviction but carry it lighter — the weight is in the belief, not the metal.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Wore everything out. The Dirty Peasant Rags fighters have been in the Dojo so long that newness has become impossible — everything they own carries the evidence.
He carried a spear through more wars than he can count and outlived nearly every man in his line. He buried brothers by torchlight and never broke — the tears came later, all at once.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Movement made permanent. The Long Flowing fighters trail behind themselves in every room they enter — the hair arrives first, then the fighter.
Fermented projectile. The Beer Splash fighters found the most abundant thing in the Dojo and weaponized it.
