Goro used to run half of Kyoto's back-alley deals with a steady hand and a colder eye, but the night he knelt at the onsen and finally said the prayer he'd been swallowing for years, something in his chest just gave out like a floor with no liquidity under it. He wept into the steam laughing at himself the whole time, mumbling apologies to men who weren't there to hear them, and by morning he'd traded his silk robes for jungle mud and mosquito bites nobody warned him about. He tells the other Dojo degens he's retreating to find discipline again, meditation, cold showers, the whole ronin monk fantasy, but mostly he just gets stoned under the canopy and cries at parrots that remind him of old friends. Every few days he tries to fast, to sit in silence like the masters did, and every few days he ends up sobbing into a bag of gas-station snacks he definitely didn't pack. Still, he carries every name he's lost like a torch through the wet dark, insisting someone has to remember them, even if that someone can't stop crying long enough to say the words clean.“
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
