Diary
Teary Goro sat cross-legged at the Emperor's Palace with Igor across the low table, dice clattering like the bones of every brother he'd carried off some forgotten field, and he laughed at Igor's terrible bluff even as his eyes went wet and shining. He won big that night, floor bids stacking in his favor, his status among the degen ronin strengthened with every roll, but he kept thinking of the ones who never lived to be this kind of foolish. Somewhere between his fourth cup of sake and Igor's fifth terrible joke, Goro decided he'd write it all down, a book, something with discipline and structure and chapters, a monument instead of a eulogy. He bought the nicest journal he could find the next morning, vowed to write one page a day like the old masters trained their forms, and has since used it mostly as a coaster and a place to sketch dice combinations while crying softly into his cup. Still, he tells anyone who'll listen that the book is coming, that grief just needs the right buy-in, and somehow, impossibly, you believe him a little.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Blade pattern. The Katana Kimono fighters understand that what you wear signals what you expect — and they expect a fight.
He carried a spear through more wars than he can count and outlived nearly every man in his line. He buried brothers by torchlight and never broke — the tears came later, all at once.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Color and structure combined. The Orange Bantu Knots fighters make their warmth architectural.
Repurposed. Made for the earth, used for the fight. The Farmers Hoe fighters don't distinguish between cultivation and combat.
