Diary
Teary Goro won the argument in the sake house the way he wins everything now, loudly, badly, with tears already forming before the old samurai even finished his sentence about honor being dead. Three cups deep he felt his confidence pump like some shitcoin catching a random bid, and for one glorious minute he believed himself sharp again, a blade instead of a man who cries at commercials for rice. He announced, half laughing, half sobbing, that he would restore his discipline properly this time, seppuku at dawn, no cap, the real ancient way, and the whole room toasted him like he'd just aped into something legendary instead of something terminal. Dawn came and went while he sat cross legged polishing a short sword he'd bought secondhand, weeping softly, whispering sorry to it like it was a fallen brother he now had to carry too, until he decided the blade deserved better lighting and maybe one more cup first. He is still sharpening it, tender and ruined, promising the moon tonight for sure, honor tomorrow, definitely tomorrow, right after this next round.
Sober, unlike the drunk variant. The Lizard fighters have a companion with excellent judgment who never asks for anything and always seems to know when to leave.
Lived-in color. The Warm Grey background belongs to fighters who have been through enough that their edges have softened without their core changing.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Half the statement. The Skull Sleeve fighters communicate their philosophy in one arm — the other arm is for whatever needs doing next.
He carried a spear through more wars than he can count and outlived nearly every man in his line. He buried brothers by torchlight and never broke — the tears came later, all at once.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The Dojo's version of a mohawk. More specific, more named. The Dejen Mohawk fighters chose the Dojo's interpretation of rebellion over the generic one.
A live chicken. As a weapon. The Chicken fighters have committed to an approach that nobody expected and found that unexpectedness is half the battle.
