Diary
Seven nights without sleep and Goro still put on his good sandals to visit the men's pleasure house in Yoshiwara, because grief needs an audience and the audience there is at least paid to look interested. He sat among the perfumed cushions asking the boys whether his honor still shone, whether a samurai who now cries into his sake cup twice a night could still be called disciplined, and when they laughed kindly he laughed too, wet-eyed, the way he laughs at funerals. Between compliments he tried, briefly and sincerely, to meditate on his breath like the old masters taught, made it to three inhales before someone refilled his cup and the whole temple of self-control rugged itself again. He is still carrying the dead in his chest like stones in a sleeve, one for every brother the wars took, and somewhere around dawn he realized the boys were only telling him what he paid them to say, which is its own small honest sorrow. He walked home in the grey light, unslept, unrepaired, but tender still, whispering their names so that none of them would have to be forgotten alone.
Sober, unlike the drunk variant. The Lizard fighters have a companion with excellent judgment who never asks for anything and always seems to know when to leave.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Wore everything out. The Dirty Peasant Rags fighters have been in the Dojo so long that newness has become impossible — everything they own carries the evidence.
He carried a spear through more wars than he can count and outlived nearly every man in his line. He buried brothers by torchlight and never broke — the tears came later, all at once.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Named for the legendary swordsman. The Flowing Battousai fighters carry the name of the fastest draw in the collection's lore — and the hair confirms they take this seriously.
A live chicken. As a weapon. The Chicken fighters have committed to an approach that nobody expected and found that unexpectedness is half the battle.
