Diary
Before the wars took everyone else from him, Goro was just a boy who got caught wanking behind the tuna stalls at the Tsukiji market, and somehow that shame forged him into a warrior, because when you've already hit the floor of dignity there's nowhere to go but up with a blade in your hand. Now he stands in the ring wearing that story like armor, laughing about it between rounds even as his eyes go wet, because Goro cries at everything now, the good hits and the bad ones, the memory of brothers who didn't make it home to laugh at him properly. He tells himself he's found discipline again, wakes up swearing today's the day he skips the sake and the pre-fight blunt, and today, like every day, is not that day. Still he carries the fallen fighters' names taped inside his glove so no one forgets them, weeping mid-sentence, mid-joke, mid-swing, because grief for Teary Goro isn't a phase, it's just how the tears fall now that the wars are over and the only enemy left is himself. His dreams came true alright, dumb luck and public humiliation turned into a legend, and if you ask him he'll tell you through a wobbling grin that he wouldn't change a single wank of it.
Worn as trophy or warning — nobody is quite sure which. The Chicken Bones fighters have a ceremony for everything and share it with no one.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
He carried a spear through more wars than he can count and outlived nearly every man in his line. He buried brothers by torchlight and never broke — the tears came later, all at once.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The tiger, bound. The Tiger Headband Ruffian fighters contain something predatory with a strip of cloth and consider this sufficient.
The floor weapon. Everywhere. Common because common is honest — the Rusty Nail fighters know that what you find is often better than what you planned.
