Diary
Teary Goro had one shot at glory, one clean shot, and he spent it in a Yoshiwara pleasure house running his mouth at a samurai who did not care for his jokes about her fallen clan. He laughs about it now, the way he laughs about everything, a wet ugly sound that cracks halfway into a sob, because the memory still sits in his chest like a stone he keeps swallowing. He tried, after, to build himself back with discipline, rising before dawn to draw his blade against the fog, but he always ends up sitting cross-legged on the dojo floor weeping quietly into his own sleeve instead of striking a single form. Ask him why he still carries that samurai's discarded sandal in his sash and he will tell you, half giggling, half breaking, that somebody has to carry what's left when a man wrecks his own glory. He is a broken thing walking in the shape of a fighter, tender to every stray dog and disgraced ronin he meets, because he knows exactly how heavy it is to be dropped.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Blessed by the Dojo's own rites. The Ordained Dejen fighters carry something that can't be revoked — the Dojo recognized them and that recognition is permanent.
He carried a spear through more wars than he can count and outlived nearly every man in his line. He buried brothers by torchlight and never broke — the tears came later, all at once.
Authority through opacity. The Dark Spectacles fighters reveal nothing through their eyes and receive everything through them.
Practical. Focused. The Hair Bun fighters pulled back what was in their eyes so they could see the whole board.
The floor weapon. Everywhere. Common because common is honest — the Rusty Nail fighters know that what you find is often better than what you planned.
