Goro still remembers the Dojo Towers that night, silk sleeves tugging at his arms, courtesans laughing too loud in his ear, and how the blade moved before his grief could catch up to his hands. He wept even as he did it, the way he weeps at everything now, tears sliding down mid laugh like his face never got the memo that the joke and the sorrow are the same muscle. He tried, after, to kneel and be still the way his old masters taught, folding his hands into something like prayer, but discipline never stays folded long in a man who keeps a dead friend's sake cup on his altar and pours it out every night instead of drinking water like he swore he would. So he built the den instead, dim and smoke thick and rigged just enough to keep the lights on, and he runs it soft handed, forgiving debts he shouldn't, carrying every drunk and broke degen out the door himself so the street never has to see them fall. He tells himself it's just gambling, just business, but really it's the only shrine he has left, one more body he can carry so nobody carries themselves alone.
