Diary
Goro had gone to the onsen at Kusatsu just to soak the ache out of his knees, but Ikari's voice cut through the steam like a blade through paper, listing every fight Goro had lost since the wars ended, every rugged trade, every promise he broke to himself, until Goro's confidence slipped under the water and never quite came back up. He laughed about it after, the way he laughs about everything now, a wet ragged sound that turns into something else halfway through, tears sliding down into the same water that swallowed his pride. That night he swore on his father's old dojo mat that he would train at dawn, rebuild the discipline the years had rotted out of him, become again the samurai who never needed anyone's approval at a bathhouse. By noon he was three cups of sake deep, weeping into a stranger's shoulder about honor while insisting, between hiccups, that tomorrow, tomorrow for real, he starts over. Still, when a fallen fighter needs carrying home from the ring, drunk tears or not, Goro is always the one who shows up, because some vows a man keeps even when he's forgotten how to keep any others.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Lived-in color. The Warm Grey background belongs to fighters who have been through enough that their edges have softened without their core changing.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The Dojo itself, worn. Whoever puts on the Degen Dojo Kimono becomes part of the institution — and the institution becomes part of them.
He carried a spear through more wars than he can count and outlived nearly every man in his line. He buried brothers by torchlight and never broke — the tears came later, all at once.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Extinct power, still present. The Sabertooth Skull fighters wear something that doesn't exist anymore — which means they carry it forward.
Patience as weapon. The Noose fighters don't rush — they set the conditions and wait for the opponent to walk into them.
