Diary
Goro used to cry at funerals with proper ceremony, folded hands, slow bows, incense doing all the talking; now the tears just show up mid-laugh at the bar, uninvited, because grief stopped waiting for permission a long time ago. Inside the Dojo he trained beside scumbags who'd rug their own cousins for gas money, and somehow their busted, gutter-honest honor taught him more about being good than any sensei's scroll ever managed. He carries the fallen now, the degens who aped their last bag and never floored back up, slinging their memory over his shoulder like a katana he refuses to sheathe. He calls himself wiser, steadier, a changed man, right up until he lights another joint and weeps softly into the smoke because discipline packed up when the wars ended and never once wrote him back. Still he drags himself to the mat every red-eyed morning, tender and off-rhythm, losing gracefully to the very stillness he keeps swearing he's already found.”
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
No clothing needed. The Shirtless Runt fighters removed every layer between themselves and the fight. Maximum exposure. Maximum honesty.
He carried a spear through more wars than he can count and outlived nearly every man in his line. He buried brothers by torchlight and never broke — the tears came later, all at once.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The warrior and the wanderer. Worn by those who are between destinations but never between fights.
A live chicken. As a weapon. The Chicken fighters have committed to an approach that nobody expected and found that unexpectedness is half the battle.
