Diary
Goro sat naked to the waist among a mountain of chicken bones at the top of Dojo Towers, grease on his chin, tears cutting clean lines through it like rain on a temple gate he used to guard. He'd told himself, again, that this month would be different: cold showers, katas at dawn, floor at a hundred sats and his belt tied tight. Instead here he was, shirt somewhere by the elevator, laughing with his mouth full because the alternative was to feel the old names crowding in, the brothers he still carries so nobody else has to. Between bites he raised a drumstick like an incense stick, muttered something that was half a prayer and half a burp, and promised the ghosts he'd do better tomorrow, voice cracking exactly the way it always does. He never remembers, the next morning, whether he was mourning or celebrating, only that both taste the same going down.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Named for something specific. The Cet Kimono fighters know what they're wearing and why — the rest is for others to figure out.
He carried a spear through more wars than he can count and outlived nearly every man in his line. He buried brothers by torchlight and never broke — the tears came later, all at once.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Aged. Sharp. The Short Spiky Grey fighters have been here long enough for color to leave — and found that what remained is more pointed than before.
Heavy, ceramic, purpose-built for one thing and used for another. The Giant Sake Bottle fighters are creative about their arsenal.
