Goro knelt on the tatami mats in his one clean robe, the rest of his laundry rugged by a bad bet three villages back, and married his geisha with a smile that kept threatening to crack into a sob. The Dojo watched him fumble the vows, forget the sake cup, weep into his own sleeve at the exact moment he tried to make a joke about his bride's terrible taste in ronin, and somehow, impossibly, they called it favor earned. He carried the memory of every fallen brother into that ceremony without meaning to, their names sitting quiet behind his eyes even as he laughed too loud at his own wedding. Discipline told him to stand still, chin up, samurai straight, but grief kept tugging his knees back to the floor, back to bowing, back to holding something that wasn't there anymore. Still the Dojo respected him after, not for composure he never had, but for showing up shaking and whole anyway, tears and all, on the mats where love and mourning turned out to be the same kneel.
