Goro sat cross legged in the alley behind the sake house, half listening to The Old Dragon ramble about honor and lost banners, half watching a mud speckled pig root through spilled rice like it owned the whole ruined dojo of the world. Something in Goro's chest, the same soft cracked thing that made him carry three fallen brothers off the last battlefield without waiting to be asked, decided the pig deserved tenderness too, and he laughed while wiping his eyes, calling it Little General, promising it a future far from the slaughterhouse. The Old Dragon just sighed the way old dragons do, told him a samurai does not fall in love mid conversation about seppuku and stew, and Goro nodded, agreed completely, then kept sneaking the pig scraps under his sleeve anyway. He knows better now, sure, the way a man knows better about weed and rice wine and betting his last coin on a three legged cockfight, which is to say not at all, just sadder and more sincere about it. He still visits that alley some nights, sits with The Old Dragon's ghostly lecture ringing in his skull, and grieves quietly for the discipline he keeps almost finding, right before something soft and undeserving walks by and breaks his heart open again.
Heavier than gold. Less prestigious. More honest. The Iron Earring fighters chose function over signal and consider that to be the signal.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Not quite there yet. The Warlock Wannabe fighters are in the process of becoming something more — and the gap between aspiration and arrival is where they live.
He carried a spear through more wars than he can count and outlived nearly every man in his line. He buried brothers by torchlight and never broke — the tears came later, all at once.
