Diary
Out in the cold, breath fogging like incense smoke, Goro fought for the shogun's seat and found instead the only calling that ever stuck: carrying the ones who fell so the snow wouldn't have them alone. He laughed when he won, the sound cracking halfway into a sob, because that's how Goro grieves now, no ceremony, no bowing to the dead, just wet eyes and a joke about the floor price of honor. The Dojo kicked him out for it, said a fighter who cries mid-laugh unsettles the sponsors, but Goro just shrugged and rolled another one, figuring discipline was always going to rug him eventually. He still tries, some mornings, to sit straight-backed and meditate like the old masters, lasts about four minutes before the ache gets loud and the vape gets closer. Banished or not, he keeps his promise anyway: nobody he loved falls unheld, not out in the cold, not anywhere, even if the man doing the holding can't stop crying long enough to say goodbye properly.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Memento mori made fashionable. The Skull Kimono fighters remember what's at stake and wear the reminder so they never forget.
He carried a spear through more wars than he can count and outlived nearly every man in his line. He buried brothers by torchlight and never broke — the tears came later, all at once.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Color and structure combined. The Orange Bantu Knots fighters make their warmth architectural.
