Diary
Edmundo came to this dojo from somewhere far enough away that nobody could pronounce it right, and he stayed because loyalty, unlike everything else in his life, was cheap and he liked how it fit. He'd meditated among the trees every dawn, trying to hold the old samurai stillness his masters drilled into him, until one morning his mind wandered to women, soft and distracting as a rug pull, and the whole meditation collapsed like a floor with no bids under it. The other guards laughed for a week, calling him lovesick instead of vigilant, and Edmundo, watchful as ever, filed the humiliation away with the quiet fury of a man who has been rugged before and doesn't forgive easily. Now he wakes earlier, meditates longer, and swears off thinking about anything but duty, though he still catches his gaze drifting past the treeline toward the village whenever a woman laughs too near the gate. He tells himself discipline is a chart he can still pump back up, one green candle at a time, even as he privately suspects his reputation, like his focus, may already be down bad.
Collected. Not borrowed. The Foes Teeth fighters carry proof of every fight they've won around their neck and find it a useful conversation starter.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Self-described. The Womanizer clothing is a declaration that the fighter has a particular relationship with the world and considers this worth advertising.
An old foreign word for wealth and protection stitched together. He guards something, though what changes depending on who's asking and how much they've had to drink.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Color and structure combined. The Orange Bantu Knots fighters make their warmth architectural.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
