Diary
Edmundo chose this Dojo the way a man chooses a home he's never seen, and he swore an oath to guard its gates long before the sparrows decided to test that oath from above. They came at him inside the Dojo itself, a screeching flock like a rug pull with wings, and the outsider who'd stared down real blades in another life folded instantly, pants and pride both gone in the same breath. He tried, afterward, to reclaim some samurai composure, sitting seiza by the koi pond with a joint he swore was just for meditation, but the ash on his hakama told the truth the birds already knew. Still, he walks the grounds now with his chin up and his gaze steady, because a man who has been humbled that completely by nature has nothing left to fear from gossiping ronin or degenerate gamblers at the door. Loyalty, he figures, was never about staying clean, it was about staying, and Edmundo stayed, soiled trousers and all, proud as any samurai who ever guarded a shogun's gate.
Sober, unlike the drunk variant. The Lizard fighters have a companion with excellent judgment who never asks for anything and always seems to know when to leave.
Neither dark nor white. The Light Grey background belongs to fighters who operate in the space between certainties and have made it comfortable there.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Not a garment — a record. The Battle Scars clothing is what's left after everything else was stripped away. These fighters wear their history.
An old foreign word for wealth and protection stitched together. He guards something, though what changes depending on who's asking and how much they've had to drink.
Still functional. Functionally broken. The Broken Glasses fighters see a cracked version of reality and have found it more honest than the uncracked one.
Intentional declaration. The Mohawk Spike fighters made a choice that announces itself before they speak.
Repurposed. Made for the earth, used for the fight. The Farmers Hoe fighters don't distinguish between cultivation and combat.
