Edmundo was never born to this island, but he chose it, and he guarded the little shrine at the edge of town like it owed him money. He didn't flinch, didn't even swear in the language he actually thinks in, just wrapped the finger in a torn sleeve and kept his post till dawn, which is the kind of quiet discipline the Dojo still talks about over cheap sake. They call him brother now, though he still eats his rice wrong and prays to gods none of them recognize, and every morning he vows to finally start that meditation routine the old masters preached, right after he finishes this bowl and this joint and maybe one more hand of cards. The finger healed crooked, a permanent reminder that respect earned in blood doesn't always heal straight, but Edmundo wears it like a medal from a war he didn't start and a discipline he's still, gently, hilariously, failing to master.
