Diary
Edmundo came to this dojo from somewhere else, some coastline nobody here could point to on a map, and he chose it the way a man chooses a bar stool he intends to die on. He tells anyone who'll listen that back home he stood watch for real stakes, and now he stands watch over drunk swordsmen who ape into every bad idea the moon puts in front of them. The hair went the night he lost his composure at 3 a.m., screaming obscenities at a pack of women outside the gate because his patience had finally rugged him, and somewhere between insult four and insult nine his scalp just decided it was done negotiating. He swears it wasn't the weed, though everyone including the moon knows it was at least partly the weed. Edmundo still walks the perimeter every night with the dry, watchful eyes of a man grading his own failures on a curve, muttering that tomorrow he'll be quieter, calmer, more like the guard he used to be, and tomorrow he never quite is.
Theology made weapon-adjacent. The Golden Jesuit Crosses fighters have a philosophy and the crosses are its badge — precise, absolute, delivered with complete conviction.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Still learning. The Student Gi fighters are the most dangerous in the Dojo — they have no habits yet, no fixed patterns, no ceiling.
An old foreign word for wealth and protection stitched together. He guards something, though what changes depending on who's asking and how much they've had to drink.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The farmer's crown. The Rice Hat fighters carry tradition on their head without ceremony — it's just what you wear when you have work to do.
Used and not cleaned. The Bloody Nunchucks fighters are efficient — cleaning was someone else's job and they had the next fight to prepare for.
