Edmundo wasn't born in these mountains, but he chose to guard them, and that loyalty cost him three molars the day Masumi decided a conversation in the dirt outside the dojo gates needed punctuation. He hadn't even disrespected her, not really, just made a dry joke about her sake tolerance, the kind of foreign-tongued humor that lands wrong in every language apparently. Now he sits with an ice pack made from a frozen edamame bag pressed to his jaw, watching the floor of this place he swore to protect, wondering if loyalty was supposed to include this much bleeding. He tells himself a real sentinel would meditate on the lesson, breathe through the pain like the old masters, but instead he's rehearsing better comebacks for next time and calling that discipline. The future, he figures, holds more teeth lost and more jokes told anyway, because a guard who chose this chaos on purpose was never getting out clean, or with a full smile.
