Diary
Edmundo came from somewhere far enough away that nobody in the dojo could point to it on a map, which suited him fine, since he'd chosen this place with open eyes and no illusions about what it cost. Some say he had shogun blood in him once, the kind of bearing that makes lesser men bow before they know why, but that was before he made the mistake of staring down Oleg across a low izakaya table over a hand of cards neither of them should have been playing sober. The stare-down lasted longer than the sake, longer than his patience, and by the time it ended Edmundo had lost his good name, half his coin, and whatever remained of the composure a shogun's ghost is supposed to carry. Now he watches the gate instead of a province, dry-eyed and foreign-tongued, muttering that a man with this many unresolved issues has no business guarding anyone, least of all himself. Still he stands post every night, disciplined by habit if not by choice, because loyalty, unlike dignity, apparently survives even Oleg.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The standard-bearer. The Proud Dejen Kimono fighters represent the collection consciously — they know what they're part of and they dress accordingly.
An old foreign word for wealth and protection stitched together. He guards something, though what changes depending on who's asking and how much they've had to drink.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Insect mastery. The Kung Fu Beetle fighters move in patterns that look inefficient until they aren't. The beetle is not decorative.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
