Edmundo came to this dojo the way most outsiders come to anything worth guarding: uninvited, unimpressed, and secretly hoping it would ask him to stay. He chose this gate the same season the wars ended for everyone else, and while the other ronin drifted into weed smoke and tilted sake cups, he found his own reckless frontier at the local yakiniku, where he once aped an entire tray of premium wagyu like it was a blue-chip mint about to get rugged by the dinner rush. The legend says he ate with the discipline of a man guarding a border and the appetite of a man who had none, grill smoke curling around him like incense at a shrine to gluttony. He tried, afterward, to swear off seconds, to eat like the disciplined blade he once carried instead of the degenerate gut he now serves, and he fails at that vow nightly with the calm of a man who has made peace with losing. Still he stands watch at dawn, dry-eyed and foreign-eyed, living one day, one skewer, one small defeat at a time, loyal to a dojo that never once asked him to be perfect.
