Edmundo came to the Dojo the way a stray dog comes to a warm doorway, an outsider who watched everyone else's back so long he forgot to watch his own, and he chose this crooked little shrine of degenerates because at least here nobody pretended to be a saint. Long before the sake and the late-night hold'em tables, he had a friend, a real one, the kind who shares a roof and a rice pot, and in the quiet of his own quarters Edmundo did the one thing a guard is never supposed to do: he turned a secret into leverage and squeezed. He got what he wanted that night, whatever small, stupid advantage it was, and it curdled in his hands like milk left out in summer, because the friend never looked at him the same way again. Now he stands post at the Dojo gates with that dry foreign-eyed calm everyone mistakes for peace, cracking jokes about the floor dropping out from under some fool's bags, all while the one debt he can never collect on is the trust he rugged himself. He tells himself discipline is a schedule you can rebuild, wakes at dawn to prove it, and by noon he's aped into a dice game and a joint someone rolled too tight, muttering that tomorrow, for sure, he starts over clean.'
