Edmundo came to this country a stranger and stayed because something about its ghosts felt honest, which is why he still climbs the shrine steps at dusk to bow before The Old Dragon like a man keeping a promise nobody witnessed. This time the old wooden guardian, or the sake he'd aped into beforehand, or both, rearranged his mouth considerably, and he spat two teeth into the moss like he was minting proof of loyalty.
