Diary
Edmundo came to this land a foreigner and stayed a guard, the one who watches gates for a living and watches himself for a hobby, which is why the noodle house incident still needles him more than any blade ever could. Three bowls of shoyu deep and one too many rounds bought by strangers, he stood up on the bench, declared something about honor and heat, and peeled his kimono off like it owed him money, silk pooling at his sandals while the whole shop went quiet except for one old woman clapping slow and mean. He remembers thinking it was a grand gesture, the kind samurai make before great deeds, only there was no great deed, just a half naked outsider steaming over broth and shame in equal measure. Now he stands post at the dojo gate fully clothed and overly vigilant, telling himself discipline is a wall he can rebuild brick by brick, though he still eyes every noodle house he passes like it might ambush him again. He can do better, he says, and means it, right up until the smell of broth wins and he starts unbuttoning his collar just to be safe.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Maximum exposure by choice. The Nudey Freak fighters are not unclothed by accident — they made a considered decision and stand by it in all weather.
An old foreign word for wealth and protection stitched together. He guards something, though what changes depending on who's asking and how much they've had to drink.
Gold-edged, elevated. The Pompous Glasses fighters have earned the right to look down at something and have chosen to look down at mediocrity.
Organization meets chaos. The Yakuza Hooligan fighters have discipline from one tradition and abandon from another, and they've combined them into something entirely their own.
